Prabir K. Patra FY2023~

Professor, Research Institute for Humanity / Principal Scientist, Dy. Group Leader, Earth Surface System Research Center, JAMSTEC / Visiting Professor, Center for Environmental Remote Sensing, Chiba University / Visiting Professor, Center for Atmospheric and Oceanic Studies, Tohoku University

Specialized field: Natural sciences, Atmospheric and Oceanic sciences, Environmental science/Agricultural sciences, Climate Change

I have a Ph.D. from Gujarat University, Ahmedabad and M.Sc. from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. After a brief spell of 3 years (1998-2001) at the IBM India Research Laboratory, Delhi I moved to JAMSTEC, Yokohama. My primary research interest is estimation of sources and sinks of greenhouse gases and ozone depleting substances using atmospheric chemistry-transport models. I have deep interests in air pollution and human health, which an urgent issue in the South Asia region.A recipient of Horiuchi Award (2016) from the Meteorological Society of Japan, for an individual who has made a significant contribution in interdisciplinary fields related to atmospheric sciences.Published more than 167 peer-reviewed articles. My team/collaborators contribute to budgets of CO2, CH4 and N2O of the Global Carbon Project (GCP) under the auspices of Future Earth, and other Japanese (SII-8, ArCS-II, GOSAT-GW) and international (TransCom, RECCAP2) research activities. Contributing Author of IPCC AR5, Lead and Contributing Author of IPCC AR6 of the WG1.Serving as editor of COMMSENV, Scientific Reports, Remote Sensing and GOSL, and Steering committee member of Japan IPCC WG1 office at JWA, GCP, RECCAP2, OCO2/3 and GOSAT-GW.

HAYASHIDA Sachiko ~FY2022

Professor, Research Institute for Humanity and Nature / Nara Women’s University

Specialized field:Natural sciences, Atmospheric and hydrospheric science, Environmental science/Agricultural science, Environmental dynamics

I have been the project leader since 2017 (FS) and retired in March 2023. Currently,  I am an emeritus professor at Nara Women’s University and  assist the new leader, Prof. Prabir Patra, as a Visiting Professor at RIHN.

My experience in atmospheric science includes remote sensing and data analysis of atmospheric trace constituents.

・Horiuchi Award from The Meteorological Society of Japan in 2002.

・A member of the Science Steering Group of the SPARC (Stratospheric Processes And their Role in Climate) under WCRP (World Climate Research Programme) from 2005 through 2008.

・A member of iCACGP (international Commission on Atmospheric Chemistry and Global Pollution) which is one of the commissions in IAMAS (International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences) under the ICSU (International Council for Science) family.

・President of The Remote Sensing Society of Japan (RSSJ) from 2020-2023.

YASUTOMI Natsuko

Specially Appointed Associate Professor, Research Institute for Humanity and Nature

Specialized field: Meteorology and climatology. Analyses of annual variability of Asian monsoon and long-range changes in surface air temperature over Highland Asia.

I’m in charge of research collaboration, support and outreach as a project manager. As a member of WG2, I contribute to senarios and parameters settings for atmospheric model simulation, make analysis of model outputs.

Akash BISWAL

Researcher, Research Institute for Humanity and Nature

Specialized field:Air quality, Emission modeling, Air Quality Modeling, Data Science, Big data analytics, Satellite remote sensing

I am a researcher specializing in the field of urban air quality and data science. During my research at NARL, Gaanki, for a PhD from Panjab University, Chandigarh, I have focused on studying the impact of particulate matter emissions on air quality and human health in Delhi. I have experiences in preparing high-resolution emissions, use of 3D chemical transport and urban dispersion models, and analysis of remote sensing data. My expertise also includes developing anthropogenic emissions such as those from road traffic and biomass burning. These emission inventories are used for conducting scenario analysis to reduce pollution while adhering to national air quality legislation.

Poonam MANGARAJ

Researcher, Research Institute for Humanity and Nature

Specialized field:Urban Air Quality, Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory, Atmospheric Chemistry, Measurement of Air Pollutants, Health Impact Assessment, Mitigation & Strategies

My research works focus on understanding Urban Air Quality through the development of ultra-fine Emission Inventory. Monitoring of air pollutants and their analysis for chemistry/transport modelling is my primordial interest. My research findings could also be referred to the policy framework and implementation of mitigation strategies for city/national scale air quality management. My prolonged career in atmospheric chemistry research has compelled me towards emerging environmental issues. With the emerging air pollution across the globe, I believe extensive work and innovation is required to tackle the emerging GHGs emission as big challenges, especially for countries of South Asia. I strongly believe that the answer to such challenges is in the environment itself. As a researcher, studying and identifying these solutions in the environment and utilizing them is my goal.
